The change in the seasons is upon us and Autumn is my favourite time of year – it is just perfection! The days are full of vibrant colour and the beginning of the ‘crisp’ air is divine and feels so refreshing. In the house, the darker evenings mean we are digging out our woolly socks, lighting candles and snuggling down in cosy corners. Usually there is a little nap in there somewhere too! Autumn also brings a new enthusiasm for cooking. After months of wanting to stay cool and not use the oven, we begin to crave warming and flavoursome food and so the cooking season begins again for another year.
Our most successful ‘garden to table’ crop has been our apples and we have a bumper crop this year. Combine these lovely crisp apples with the blackberries we collect out on our dog walks and we have the beginnings of a scrumptious crumble.
My gluten free crumble recipe is delicious – even if I do say so myself 😉 The muscovado sugar gives the topping a lovely flavour. While I am talking of sugar, I think I should mention that the sugar content of this recipe is a lot lower than the usual crumble recipe. We like things quite tart, but if you love things sweeter than sweet – just increase the sugar to your liking. Sweet or tart, this crumble is a great way of welcoming Autumn!
